Addressing transition needs of Chicago Housing Authority Residents.
Making the Difference International, Inc. was approached to assist in the nation’s largest public housing relocation project. Chicago has been known for having the largest public housing high-rises in the country. The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department instructed the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) to make significant and life altering changes for the residents of CHA. The plan is to tear down the high-rises and move the residents into either private housing or into government subsidized mixed income locations.
MDI has been contracted to assist in several components of the relocation project. MDI has developed a training to assist residence on daily living skills, the expectations of the private housing market and ways to prepare for home ownership. MDI has also been contracted to network with landlords to provide quality housing options for CHA residence, as well as assist the residence in locating and moving into quality private housing.
MDI recognizes the delicate balance of CHA’s position of moving residence and the residence emotional and economic obstacles and potential limitations. With that understanding MDI has hired experienced mental health workers to assist in this program. The mental health workers not only work with the residence in the relocation process but also assist in the emotional factors that present themselves throughout this process.
